More and more teams head to an outside location to step away from the daily rush, recharge and think about what’s next. Worthwhile, but the quality depends on good preparation, a group ready to leave the beaten track, and the right place.
Be clear about the goal
Make an agenda that reflects the goal. If it’s about participation, ask for input beforehand. If it’s about roles and responsibilities, be clear about expectations.
Choose an original place
In your own meeting room people fall back into the same rituals: checking phones, contributing less. In a new place the group is allowed to daydream.
Calm, privacy and space
A place you have to yourselves, without other seminar groups. And a sense of space: anyone who needs a moment can step outside or to another level, without leaving the group.
Light, air and good food
The more daylight and windows that open, the better. Don’t save on food and drink: cooking and eating together really brings a team closer.
Check the facilities
Wifi, tables, chairs, a screen or big white walls, a blackboard, flip charts, an espresso machine and sofas to unwind.
How it went at the loft
A PR agency held a workshop here for bloggers on New Year’s resolutions, with a raw-food cooking class as the culinary part. Photographers in training learned to build a complete shoot, from lighting set-up to editing. Each time the neutral loft was transformed into the theme of the day.
